Stories of change

Behind every statistic is a child whose life has been transformed. Here are just a few of their stories.

Adaeze, 14 — Education programme
EducationIjebu-Ode, Ogun State
Before the scholarship, my father said I would have to stop school after primary six. Now I am in JSS3 and I want to be a doctor. The Foundation did not just pay my fees — they believed in me.

Adaeze is the eldest of five children. Her father, a subsistence farmer, could not afford secondary school fees after a poor harvest in 2022. A Bright Futures scholarship covered her fees, uniform, and books. She has since ranked in the top three of her class every term.

Emeka, 8 — Healthcare programme
HealthcareSagamu, Ogun State
The nurse came to our village and gave me medicine. I stopped being sick all the time. Now I can go to school every day.

Emeka missed more than half of his school days in 2023 due to recurring malaria. After our mobile clinic began monthly visits to his community, he received preventive treatment and a bed net. In 2024, he had zero malaria episodes and achieved full attendance for the first time.

Blessing, 11 — Education programme
EducationAbeokuta, Ogun State
I used to be afraid to read out loud because I was behind the other children. The tutoring club helped me catch up. Now I help the younger ones.

Blessing joined our after-school tutoring club two years behind her peers in literacy. Within eight months of structured support from trained community volunteers, she reached grade level. She now volunteers as a peer tutor herself on Saturday mornings.

— Blessing, 11

Mama Tunde — Community programme
CommunityIfo, Ogun State
The cooperative taught me to save. For the first time I had money to pay school fees without borrowing. My children will not drop out like I did.

A mother of three, Mama Tunde joined one of our women's cooperatives in 2023. Through the group savings scheme and a small business loan, she expanded her food-trading business. Her increased income means all three of her children are now in school and staying there.
